The Science of Electroluminescent Technology

INTRODUCTION

Electroluminescent (EL) lighting provides a printable source of illumination which can routinely be applied to plastic substrates, creating thin, rugged, yet flexible patterns of illumination. While some people are familiar with EL in its use as a backlighting technology (for example, in the single color Indiglo wristwatches), its great versatility enables it to be used in many other commercially advantageous applications.

COLOR AND MOVEMENT

NeoLite EL is colored light that moves. It presents eye catching displays, bright colors, and complex animation. This technology offers NeoLite unique advantages for signage and point of purchase displays.

COOL AND ENERGY EFFICIENT
NeoLite EL is a solid state process which generates no heat. As a result, display designers are freed from the engineering constraints of dealing with thermal issues. Since no energy is wasted in generating the light, no additional energy is needed to utilize the light. A room full of EL displays requires no additional air-conditioning.

THIN AND LIGHT-WEIGHT

Neolite EL is routinely built on customized but inexpensive polyester sheets which are 0.007" thick. Even when decorative overlays are applied (again, usually 0.010" or thinner), the result is a super-thin package which is lightweight and flexible. Hardware requirements for mounting are minimized (no heavy chains and fasteners), curved displays to fit walls and pillars are easy to produce, custom shapes and sizes come easily, all at a fraction of an ounce per square inch.

As with everything at Neolite, custom requests can be addressed. Just ask our designers.

BRIGHT

NeoLite signs are among the brightest in the industry. The manufacturing used by NeoLite facilitates the optimized performance of the brightest currently available phosphors. At 110V, 400 Hz operation, a brightness of 15 fL can easily be achieved. Use of special colors can affect overall brightness, but the impact is strong even at low illumination levels. NeoLite EL's visibility is enhanced by animation and superior graphical clarity.

ANIMATION

NeoLite EL can be prepared with multiple segments, and powered sequentially to produce an animated effect. Whether this is flashing sign to catch attention, or a scroll through a sequence to tell a story or describe a product, the apparent motion of the sign adds to it effectiveness in catching the viewer's attention. PERFORMANCE

The understanding and use of modern polymer chemistry techniques optimize the brightness and lifetime of these inexpensive displays. To keep its place at the forefront, NeoLite is involved with ongoing research into new display materials so that the brightest, longest lived EL will always be available from NeoLite.

LIFE/ USE

Detailed life information for your NeoLite EL product depends on the specific application and use. Consult our design facility and find out that NeoLite products have a life / performance package which suits your signage application ideally. Current NeoLite products in general provide thousands of hours of useful life. In addition, NeoLite remains at the forefront of evaluating and developing new materials which promise enhanced brightness and lifetime in the near future.

Natural reduction of brightness occurs in EL as it does in all light sources. Intermittent use or cycling and animation impact effective lifetime proportionately, so the manner in which the display system is used is a critical part of the function and planning of the system.

COLORS

A range of intrinsic phosphor colors, as well as white light, can be selected for your NeoLite products. But the highest impact comes from the carefully designed interaction of graphic overlay and illumination system that NeoLite's custom designers can provide. Your corporate logo, your Service Mark, or your inspirational message can appear in the colors you want, whether lit or unlit.

POWER CONSIDERATIONS

NeoLite lamps typically use less than 20 mW per square inch of lit display. All systems need an inverter which can be specified to run from main current (wall power) (110V, 60 Hz) in the US, or from a separate (battery) supply.

Power can be applied in any way which suits your needs. As long as it is AC power, the voltage and frequency of the excitation can be traded off to provide an optimal solution. The brightness is proportional to the voltage and, separately, to the frequency chosen.
